I had to reread this, with the smut off (ie: not looking at it at all) to remember to tell you. I mean, you literally made historical knowledge IN MY OWN FIELD OF TRAINING walk out of my head. My hat is so very off to you.

Spinning is ancient tech, if there are plants there than makes puffs, or you can also use some kinds of animal furs. The jinny isn't going to be the problem, it's the comb to get the seeds out that'll be problematic on the island. I dunno, have you ever done felting? It's the same principle, only you'd pick the seeds out (and get cut up by them occasionally until your hands were used to it), collect everything in a pile or wind it loosely on a spool, or better yet a distaff, and then rub the fibers through your fingers to roll them into thread, winding them onto a simple dowel skein as you went. It's not really an easy job, which was why they invented the spinning wheel. But the combing and carding would be the part he couldn't manage there.

The Doctor could make Rose a distaff out of any tree, really, but I think he may not actually know how himself - this is WAY low tech, and also was so considered to be women's work that the tool of the trade became another word for womankind. I'm certain it isn't ooc or anything like that for him to have no knowledge here. I just can't help but wonder if Rose might've ever visited some sort of living history museum as a kid. :-) Might be an interesting thing...
